PSALM 72 – Give the King Your Justice (ESV) or
“A Song of Solomon” (title and notes from James Montgomery Boice: Psalms, Vol. 2)

“A Song of Solomon,” is a very interesting title to Psalm 72.  As a caution here, this title could be confusing since there is a book in the Old Testament named, Song of Solomon; this is not what it means.  Psalm 72 is truly a psalm of Solomon, which could

PSALM 71 – Forsake Me Not When My Strength Is Spent (ESV) or
“A Psalm for Old Age” (title and notes from James Montgomery Boice: Psalms, Vol. 2)

Well, this title “A Psalm for Old Age” is not too appealing; however, I’m sure Boice has a good reason to title Psalm 71 in this way.

Let’s begin first with some notes from my Ryrie Study Bible: The unnamed, aged writer of the psalm cries for help (vs. 1-3), prays for deliverance because of a confidence based on God’s lifelong care for him (vs. 4-13), and resolves to continue praising God (vs. 14-24). We see in verse 7 that

PSALM 70 – O LORD, Do Not Delay (ESV) or
“Let God Be Exalted” (title and notes from James Montgomery Boice: Psalms, Vol. 2)

PSALM 70
TO THE CHOIRMASTER. OF DAVID, FOR THE MEMORIAL OFFERING.
1  Make haste, O God, to deliver me!
            O LORD, make haste to help me!
2   Let them be put to shame and confusion who seek my life!
            Let them be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt!
3   Let them turn back because of their shame who say, “Aha, Aha!”
4   May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you!
            May those who love your salvation say evermore, “God is great!”
5   But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God!
            You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay!

Clearly Psalm 70 is the shortest psalm of the Psalter, but is packed full of magnificent treasure and truth.  Let’s dig deep to find it.

First, let’s look at

PSALM 69  – Save Me, O God (ESV) or A Man of Sorrows: Part 2
                   Judgment and Redemption (title and notes from James Montgomery Boice)

Let’s start where we left off last time beginning with verse 22 and read to the end, to verse 36 of this messianic psalm.  Most interestingly, 7 of its 36 verses are quoted in the New Testament, and there are themes that are developed in a general way in reference to

PSALM 69  – Save Me, O God (ESV) or A Man of Sorrows: Part I
                   A Plea for Help in Suffering (title and notes from James Montgomery Boice)

Let’s begin by reading the first 21 verses while contemplating Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for us on the cross.  After your reading, could you picture Him there for you?

Psalm 69 is clearly about Jesus.  In fact, it is one of the most obviously messianic psalms in the psalter.  Arno C. Gaebelien captures something of this flavor when he says of Psalm 69, “What a precious psalm it is! It begins with the cry of the one who

PSALM 68 (Part 2) – God Shall Scatter His Enemies (ESV) or
          God Who Saves: Part 2 (title and notes from James Montgomery Boice)

Let’s begin with the majestic thought that we have an awesome God, greater than our thoughts can even comprehend (read vs. 19-35).  We can’t help but praise our glorious God after reading such a

PSALM 68  – God Shall Scatter His Enemies (ESV) or
          God Who Saves: – Part I (title and notes from James Montgomery Boice)

Let’s begin with the first verse: “God shall arise, his enemies shall be scattered; and those who hate Him shall flee before Him!” Psalm 68 is a song of military triumph (p. 552 from Boice’s Psalms Volume 2) written by David for

PSALM 67  – Make Your Face Shine Upon Us (ESV) or
          The Shining Face of God (title from James Montgomery Boice)

“God be gracious to us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us—“ v. 1

What a remarkable event: to see the face of God!  Only heaven will allow that glorious event to take place.  It makes me wonder… Do I long for heaven? Do I long to see the Lord face to face?  I can honestly say I do long for

PSALM 66  – How Awesome Are Your Deeds (ESV) or
          A Praise Psalm of Thanksgiving (title from James Montgomery Boice)

What a beauty!  Let’s take a closer look at the beginning of Psalm 66:
To the Choirmaster.   A Song.  A Psalm.
Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name;
Give to him glorious praise!
Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.
All the earth worships you and sings praises to you;
They sing praises to your name.” Selah   (vs. 1-4 ESV)

PSALM 65  – O God of our Salvation (ESV) or

          All Good Gifts from Our Good God (title from James Montgomery Boice)   Please take some time to read this precious psalm of thanksgiving.  In this thanksgiving psalm, David praises God for the following:

  1. His favor (vs. 1-4);
  2. His greatness (vs. 5-8) and for
  3. His harvest (vs. 9-13) [outline taken from the Ryrie Study Bible].
I think this is just beautiful.  Let’s stop and truly ponder
